Something was wrong. I've heard how the bonding process was supposed to go and this was certainly not normal. The crowd behind me nervously brought their attention to other things. The music, the fire dancer, the nice clothes of that rich woman from Khine. Whatever they could to bring their attention away from the odd site of a girl who turned a spira into a gem. A few people came to stare at me, whispering silently. A couple of kids my age were threatening me that they were going to tell about me being underage. Some people gave congratulations for finding a spira on my first festival.
My mother came over, as always accompanied by Myrtle, "I'm so proud of you! I don't know if it'll be any help on the farm, but maybe you can move onto better things! You know, your uncle Tian's spira was one of good luck! He moved to Khine and was living the high life! Too bad he died at Twenty-three. Strong spira have been known to increase your chances of disease!" She reconsidered what she said, "But don't worry dear, you'll be fine. You're still young after all!"
Myrtle only nodded silently in agreement, as she always did.
"Let's head back though. I expect that you must be tired!" She eyed the gem, "And that gem must go for a fortune! Looks like the spira had it with it. How lucky! I'll get a jeweler over here tomorrow-"
"Mother, I don't think the spira wants me to sell the gem."
"Oh! I hadn't thought of that," she said with a laugh as we walked towards our house, "speaking of which, why don't you ask the spira to appear? You haven't been introduced yet, have you?"
"I think we're both tired. Maybe tomorrow," I said. But in truth, I hadn't sensed the spira at all. I have no clue how I was supposed to notice the spira's presence, but to me I felt the same. I didn't feel any different. I took another look at the gem; it was now red with black specs.
The next morning, I woke up freezing. I had been sleeping with no blanket on, even though it was the middle of fall. Strangely enough, I remember being warm when I went to bed last night. It should have been colder then! I dressed in my clothes when I saw the gem. I had to remember to bring that thing with me, after all, my mother wanted me to greet the spira. I didn't even know it's name yet! I reached out to pick up the rock, only to find it was warm. The feeling spread throughout my body quickly, and soon it felt as though it was a warm summer day with a slight breeze. I then heard a voice in my head. I couldn't tell if it was a voice of not, it was like I was thinking it, even though I knew I wasn't. I couldn't tell if it was a male or female voice, it seemed to have both. Simply put, all I knew was that it was like a conscience.
In case you were wondering, I heard in my head, My name is Knat. I am a spira, as you are bound to be aware of. I do not specialize in much, but rather a little of everything. I suppose one could say I control heat. I admit it isn't much, but a little is plenty to most.
"Eh... My name is Robei and I suppose you would like to tell me why you have this gem?" I spoke aloud.
That gem, said Knat, Is mine. I own it. I don't want to lose it. I may not be... normal for a spira in having something, but this has always been my prized possession.
"I see why you might like it. It's... a nice gemstone," I said.
Knat didn't respond.
